Our General Tso’s Simmer Sauce is a rich, boldly flavored brown sauce that’s tangy and sweet with a savory-salty soy note, a bright aroma and a moderate bite of heat. Visible flecks of garlic, red chilies, and black sesame seeds lend authentic texture and additional flavor complexity to the sauce. Serve with stir-fried vegetables or crisp-steamed broccoli and white rice. Invented in the 1950s, sticky sweet and spicy General Tso’s chicken has become a take-out staple around the world. Two chefs have claimed to be the original inventor of the dish — Taiwanese chef Peng Chang-kuei and famed Sichuan chef Tsung Ting Wang (known as T.T. by friends). The original was most likely created in Taiwan by Peng Chang-kuei based on traditional Hunan flavors, but the New York-based Tsung Ting Wang introduced the sweet and fried version served in many Chinese restaurants worldwide. There are many name variations, including General Tso’s, General Gau’s and General Cho’s. While the dish is named in honor of General Zuo Zongtang, this favorite meal was invented decades after he lived. (8 fl. oz)
