5 answers about the Keto Diet

With a busy daily life, in a world of technology, many of us spend too much time sitting by the computer or a mobile device. What we should do is to activate ourselves, exercise and think about a healthy lifestyle and what we eat so we get more energy and feel better.

Losing weight is a popular topic in many magazines. Even though the most important thing is to be and feel healthy, we would lie if we ignored all the different diets out there. For most of us it’s hard to keep track, or to find the one that best fits us best! It all depends on the body, our habits and the way of life.  So, to make it easier for you, I want to explain the Keto diet in 5 bullet points:

  • What is it?

A high-fat, adequate-protein and low-carbohydrate diet, quite similar to Paleo and Atkins diets. In fact, the ketogenic diet, if strictly followed, has been mostly used (for years) in medicine, to treat epileptic seizures in children and more recently for weight loss.

  • How does this work?

It is based on the fact that you get more calories from protein and fat and less from carbohydrates. This diet is making your body burn fat rather than carbohydrates. If you cut your daily carbohydrates, after a few days, your body will start breaking down protein and fat for energy and it will make you lose weight.

  • What do you eat?

Keto diet is based on high-fat requirements. Look at unsaturated fat food such as nuts, seeds, avocados, tofu and olive oil, or saturated fat food such as oils, lard, butter and cocoa butter.

Proteins are also part of the keto diet, such as eggs, beef, pork, and bacon.

Regarding fruits and vegetables, for veggies you can eat kale, spinach, cauliflower, broccoli, brussels sprouts, asparagus, bell pepper, mushrooms, cucumbers, onions, garlic and other leafy green vegetables or those less rich in carb. As for fruits, it will be similar, though you can choose fruits such as berries (raspberries, strawberries…) or peaches, cantaloupe, lemon, watermelon. Avoid any fruits rich in carbs.

  • What are the Pros?

You will lose weight in the short term, and certain people with some health conditions (bad cholesterol, acne, epilepsy, other nervous system disorder) might have some benefits.

  • What are the Cons?

In the long run, there can be side effects such as fatigue, headaches, irritability, kidney stones, indigestion, or constipation. Always be aware of how you feel when trying a diet like this. If you get side effects, we recommend you to try something different.

Of course, everyone has different needs and wants so it is always best to check with your doctor if a specific diet is suitable for you, especially if you have a certain type of disease. Always remember the essentials: sleep well, exercise and drink more water… they go with all diets!
